Chapter 12

First, I dropped off Isla because she needed to work on baking some tarts for a client. Next, I swung by my house and dropped off Dad and Piper. Only after they were out of the truck did it occur to me my plan had a fatal flaw, and I was now alone with my ex.

Cam scooched over into the passenger seat, buckled up, and gazed out the window. “Thanks for bailing me out,” he said finally. “I can’t imagine staying in jail all that time.”

“Was it terrible?”

He shrugged. “I mean, as far as jails go, it’s pretty cushy. No roommates, three squares, and a TV. But it’s still a jail.”

“Yeah, I get it.”

Silence took over for a moment. My thoughts were on Cam’s upcoming trial and potential return to jail—a real one in a big city and for long-term. I had to figure out who was really supposed to be behind bars and find evidence. That was the only way to fix this.

Cam studied my profile, and I felt distinctly as though he were reading my mind. He confirmed that when he said, “It’s not your responsibility to get me out of this. I’m going to have to figure out what to do. My lawyer can help, I hope. Maybe I can hire a PI or something.” He rubbed a hand over his tired features. “I don’t know.”

“You can’t afford that,” I argued. “Besides, I’m already pretty deep into this investigation.”

He peeked out from behind his hand and blinked a couple times. “You are? What do you mean?”

“I have a few suspects, and now I know the murder weapon.”

“How . . .” He shook his head. “Don’t tell me where you found that stuff out. I don’t want to be able to testify against you. “What’s the murder weapon?”

“A liquid heart medication that was slipped into his beer.” A sudden thought occurred to me. I remembered pulling the pompom from Glory’s hat out of the puddle of beer left in Rod’s cup. It had smelled strange. Could she have soaked the pompom and dropped it into her husband’s glass?

But what about the other people who complained of a strange smell to the beer in the keg? The folks at the microbrewery had claimed everything was fine with the keg, but why had people thought it smelled wrong?

“Oops. I have to meet with Glory Cliff at her house.” I glanced at the clock on the dashboard. “I’ll drop you off.”

“Glory Cliff. The sheriff’s wife?”

“Yeah. She wants me to plan a Christmas party for her.” I winced. “And the luncheon after Sheriff Cliff’s memorial service.”

“Where are you meeting her?”

“At her house.”

He shook his head and continued doing so even as he started speaking. “Nope. No way. You can’t go to her house alone. What if she’s a murderer? I mean, she’s his wife. I don’t know what her motive would be, but the wife is always the biggest suspect, right?”

I scrunched my nose. “Her motive would be that Rod was a cheater.
